The trail is often busy but there is plenty of room to spread out and enjoy nature. We spent about 4 hours for the entire trip. The hike in across the grassland took about an hour, and we spent about 3 hours exploring the rocks and wading in the water.

There is a sandy area, but bottom of the lake is rocky and the lake does have zebra mussels so it’s best to bring water shoes if you plan to enter the water. My boys loved playing in the extremely fine sand and water even though we visited in early March when the water was very cold. The water is shallow around the base of the rocks so it is dangerous to attempt to jump off the rocks into the water. There are no bathrooms along the trail and no shade so be sure to plan accordingly.

The trail is free, but be sure to follow directions for having a state park permit to enter the the park. Passes are available at the entrance station to the park.

We will definitely be returning when the weather warms up and we will bring the wagon and have a picnic and enjoy a fire and sunset from one of our favorite spots in central KS.
